The story
of an Afghan father who gives up his daughter in 1952 is told in Khaled
Hosseini's book, And the Mountains Echoed, along with the consequences of his
choice on his family and others. Through the interconnected lives of its
characters, the book seeks the themes of love, loss, war, and morality. Nabi,
the uncle of Abdullah and Pari and the brother of Parwana and Masooma is one of
these figures. Nabi is a complex and ambiguous character who exhibits
compassion and loyalty while also making some morally dubious decisions.
Nabi is a
servant for the Wahdatis, a well-off Kabul couple who take Pari in after
Saboor. Mr. Wahdati, who suffers a stroke and becomes paralyzed, is the object
of Nabi's covert love. Nila Wahdati, Mr. Wahdati's wife, is drawn to Nabi as
well, but he does not feel the same way. When Mr. Wahdati passes away, Nabi
continues to be loyal to him and receives his assets. Nabi is devoted to Mr.
Wahdati and feels loyal to him, but their relationship also frustrates and
dissatisfies him.
Nabi is
also responsible for putting together the agreement to sell Pari to the
Wahdatis. He does this for several reasons, including helping Pari, his sister,
and his employer. He believes that what he is doing is best for everyone
involved. He disregards the emotional impact that will result from severing
Pari from her devoted brother Abdullah, though. Additionally, he does not
consider how his choice will affect him for the rest of his life. He feels bad
and embarrassed about what he did.
By telling
Pari the truth about her past and requesting that she find Abdullah in a
letter, Nabi makes up for his error. He also requests that the letter be
delivered to Pari after his passing by Dr. Markos Varvaris, who will receive
the Wahdati's estate. He hopes that Pari and Abdullah will reconcile and accept
his responsibility for his actions.
Nabi is a
character who possesses both good and bad qualities. He is thoughtful,
diligent, compassionate, devoted, and generous. His other traits include
secrecy, guilt, resentment, frustration, and unhappiness. He experiences
intense emotions, which he frequently hides or suppresses from others. He makes
decisions and takes actions for a variety of reasons. He must confront or
resolve several conflicts. Although he challenges some of them, he is
influenced by the social mores and values of his time and place.
Characters
like Nabi serve as metaphors for the complexity and ambiguity of human nature.
He is a person who tries to do good but also makes mistakes; he is neither a
hero nor a villain. He is a person who asks for forgiveness but also needs it;
he is neither a saint nor a sinner. He has depth and dimension and is not a
straightforward or one-dimensional character.
Nabi is a
character who challenges the reader's moral standards and encourages them to
consider alternative viewpoints. He is a figure who reflects the themes and
problems the book tackles. Long after the reader has finished the book, he is a
character who stays with them.
